Powered by a Kieren Webster hat trick, the CD Dodd Perth Thunder survived a late scare from the visiting Sydney Bears to record a thrilling 5-4 win at Perth Ice Arena on Sunday night.
Webster scored the Thunder's second, third and fifth goals en route to recording his first career hat trick, while Louick Marcotte and Jason McMahon each found the back of the net to push the Thunder to their second win of the season.
The Thunder raced out to an early 2-0 lead courtesy of McMahon and Webster, before the Bears raced back to level the scores at 2-2 before the end of the first period.
The second period went by without a score, and it took less than 15 seconds of the third period for the Thunder to regain the lead through Webster's second goal, while the top line kept clicking as Marcotte found twine less than two minutes later.
Webster made the most of his opportunity to play on Thunder's top line, taking a Keven Veilleux pass and depositing it past Bears goaltender Anthony Kimlin for his hat trick less than five minutes in to the third period to give the Thunder what would prove to be an unassailable lead.
The Bears scored twice late to ensure a thrilling finish, but the Thunder had done enough to record their first regulation win at home this season, and their third win overall after seven games.
This weekend the Thunder travel to Canberra to take on the CBR Brave on Saturday and Sunday, with an audio stream available via CBR's social media feeds.
