Thunder 5 - Adrenaline 2

Thunder 5 - Adrenaline 2

Jordan Scardetta

The CD Dodd Perth Thunder have skated away from a home weekend with all six points for the first time this season, overcoming a spirited Adelaide Adrenaline 5-2 on Sunday night.

A three-goal third period from the Thunder proved to be the difference in the game, as Shaun Tobin (two goals, one assist) and Keven Veilleux (one goal, two assists) each recorded three-point nights, and Louick Marcotte continued his scoring touch with two assists.

Rob Haselhurst hit the back of the net twice and Andrew Cox registered two assists, while Jake Gilmour also made a strong contribution in his Thunder debut, tallying two assists, and Nico Viksten made 21 saves to record the win, with the Thunder registering a dominant 48 shots on net.

The Thunder started in ideal fashion, with Tobin getting on the board in the opening five minutes as the home team held the balance of play, before the Adrenaline were able to level the score at 1-1 halfway through the period.

Haselhurst scored his first just before intermission to head in to the break with a 2-1 lead, but the Adrenaline fought back in the second period to have the score tied at 2-2 after two periods.

The Thunder were in early penalty trouble in the third period as Jamie Woodman sat for elbowing, but Rob Haselhurst made the most of a sloppy Adrenaline line change, slotting a beauty backhand top-shelf to restore the lead.

The Thunder never looked back from there, registering 22 shots on net in the third period alone as Adrenaline goaltender Jesse Gordichuk was powerless to stop the onslaught.

Tobin and Veilleux both found the back of the net in the final minutes to secure the 5-2 win for the Thunder and draw them equal fourth in the standings.

Next weekend sees the Thunder once again tackling the Adrenaline, this time in Adelaide, with the chance to give themselves some breathing room inside the top four.
