Kyros hits rare milestone

Kyros hits rare milestone

Jordan Scardetta

The semi-professional and transient nature of the Australia Ice Hockey League workforce makes longevity a rare occurrence, and one the Perth Thunder’s own will hit a rare milestone this Sunday, becoming the first Thunder player to surpass 200 AIHL games.

Jordy Kyros has been with the Thunder since opening night, all the way back in April 2012, and now leads the team in games played (198), ahead of long-time linemate Andrew Cox (189), and is second in all-time points (144) to Ben Breault (175).

After seven years in the AIHL, for Kyros the fire still burns as bright as ever.

“I can’t believe I’ve played 200 games to be honest, I reckon I could squeeze in another 200,” Kyros said. “I still love chucking the jersey on every game and I want a championship with the boys more and more every year.”

Kyros will become just the 36th player in AIHL history to reach the 200-game mark, but the 27-year-old sees the achievement more from the lens of team progress than that of his own game.

“It’s weird for me, I think because I’ve been playing since Thunder first started I kind of see it (the milestone) more as a reflection of how far the club has come in 7 years,” Kyros said.

While Kyros has been present for all of the biggest moments in Thunder history, from the opening game to a game at Perth Arena to multiple finals series, it’s the joy of playing in his home town that sticks out most for the winger.

“It feels awesome to have had the opportunity to play AIHL out of my home state,” Kyros said. “I appreciate everyone that’s put their time into building the club and getting it started from Stan (Scott) to the volunteers.”

“I guess I feel lucky to have such a good group of mates in the Thunder to share my 200th game with.”
