Preparing for his fourth IIHF World Championships with the Australian Mighty Roos, Perth Thunder forward Jordy Kyros heads to Mexico City in April with one clear goal in mind: to win gold.
Australia, with Kyros on the team, was demoted to Division 2, Group B after last year’s championships, something Kyros says he and his teammates are determined to set right.
“Our main goal is to win, get the gold and go back to where we deserve to be, in the higher division,” Kyros said. “Last year we had a few injuries and a few bad bounces, we won a game and we still got demoted.”
“I think we definitely deserve to be in the higher division and we’ll definitely be gunning for gold.”
Kyros believes the Australian team could gain the competitive advantage in the tournament, with a shake-up to the pre-tournament training camp hoping to aid the team’s chances of winning.
“We’ll be doing the training camp at the rink we’re actually playing at.” Kyros said. “Usually we go to another country like Finland or Canada for training camp, but this year we’re doing it in Mexico.”
Kyros and the Australian team, including Thunder defenseman Rob Haslehurst, will take on New Zealand, Bulgaria, Israel, Korea and hosts Mexico in the tournament beginning April 9, with Kyros particularly keen to play against teammates Andrew Cox and Dale Harrop, who will be playing for New Zealand.
“I think it’s cool that I get to play against Coxy and Dale,” Kyros said. “I haven’t played against Coxy since 2010; we played against each other five years ago and haven’t played against him since then.”
