The Perth Thunder have set a club record for consecutive wins with an eighth-straight victory, overpowering the Melbourne Ice to win 5-4 in a shootout.
The match was the second such win of the weekend for the Thunder, who passed the mark of seven consecutive wins set back in 2013 on the back of two goals from Ben Breault and a shootout winner from Michael Dorr.
Thomas Heemskerk was once again stellar in net, stopping 44 of 48 shots to continue his remarkable season in the AIHL.
The first period went scoreless, before Ben Breault opened the scoring for the Thunder, capitalising on a great stretch pass from Alastair Punler to score a short-handed goal and make the score 1-0.
Breault then scored his second of the night when he connected with a one-time shot on the power play to make the score 2-0, before the Ice rallied with three consecutive goals to take a 3-2 lead in to the second intermission.
Jessyko Bernard tied the scores with a great backhand shot after an opportunity on the rush with just six minutes remaining in the third period.
Michael Dorr then took the lead for the Thunder with 3.19 remaining on the clock, but the Ice levelled the scores once again just seconds later and after another dramatic finish, the Thunder and Ice would force another shootout.
Michael Dorr scored the only goal of the shootout in the first round, and only the standard three round were required to give the Thunder the win, the weekend sweep, and a club-record eighth consecutive win.
The Thunder travel to New South Wales next weekend and will take on the Sydney Ice Dogs on Saturday before travelling to Newcastle to take on the North Stars on Sunday.
