As the Australian Ice Hockey League season approaches the halfway mark, all teams break this weekend for the second annual AIHL All-Star fixture. Perththunder.com.au will this week take a look at each of the Thunder’s four All-Star representatives.
Michael Dorr signed for the Perth Thunder earlier this year as a hard-skating forward who promised to show some offensive flair hit the score sheet, and it’s precisely those qualities that have seen him selected for the AIHL’s second annual All-Star game.
The Minnesota native has been busy supplying his line mates with goals so far this year, registering a team-high 11 assists on the season, with his playmaking ability landing him a spot on Team Armstrong, captained by Melbourne Ice forward Matt Armstrong.
Dorr said he’s looking forward to the challenge and experience of the All-Star fixture.
“I think it's a great honour to be selected, I've heard from others that it is a special weekend and I am excited to be a part of it this year,” Dorr said.
As a part of the weekend, players will compete in a series of skills-based contests to earn points for their teams, as well as the potential to win prizes, but Dorr says he’s more looking forward to getting among the players and fans.
“I’m looking forward to the experience as a whole,” Dorr said. “The skills competition and the all-Star game will be awesome, but I'm excited about meeting and getting to know all the guys from the other teams. It's an opportunity for guys within the league to get to know each other.”
Dorr also expressed his desire to compete against Thunder teammate Ben Breault, who will be lining up for Team Schlamp, captained by Sydney Bears forward Michael Schlamp.
“It will be a little strange that I'll be lining up against Ben but it’s all fun and games,” Dorr said. “It will be fun to joke around with him on the ice and give him a couple hacks here and there.”
The All-Star weekend is this Saturday and Sunday, June 11 and 12, at Penrith Ice Palace, west of Sydney. Saturday will be comprised of the skills competitions (click here for more information), while Sunday will stage the All-Star game between Team Schlamp and Team Armstrong.
Below is a highlights package from the 2015 All-Star event, and while the 2016 event isn’t televised live, a 90-minute special presentation will air on Fox Sports on Thursday, June 16 (check your local guide for times).
