As the Australian Ice Hockey League season approaches the halfway mark, all teams break this weekend for the second annual AIHL All-Star fixture. Perththunder.com.au will this week take a look at each of the Thunder’s four All-Star representatives.
Canadian import Ben Breault is well on his way to achieving what he set out to do at the start of the season, leading the Perth Thunder in goals and total scoring, which has earned him a spot on Team Schlamp in the 2016 AIHL All-Star game.
Breault made the bold prediction at the beginning of the season that he’d post 50 points in 2016, and his 20 points after 12 games indicate he could be on his way to that goal.
The forward has gathered a reputation for having a rocket of a wrist shot, and he’s looking to put all of his skills on display over the coming weekend.
“It is an honour to be selected among the top players in the league and to be able to showcase some of our skills,” Breault said earlier in the week as he prepared for the All-Star game.
Breault is one of four Thunder representatives in the All-Star fixture, but is the only one playing for Team Schlamp, captained by Sydney Bears forward Michael Schlamp, something Breault says could be an interesting experience.
“Definitely a bit weird (playing against Thunder teammates) but there will be plenty of laughter,” Breault said. “As long as he (Michael Dorr) keeps his head up, he should be fine.”
Breault said he was most looking forward to showcasing to the fans how much skill is abound in the Australian Ice Hockey League, and to bringing some fun and excitement to the weekend.
“To me, this weekend is all about having fun around the rink,” Breault said. “ I’m looking forward to just having a good time, meeting new people and hopefully doing well in whichever competition I will be taking part in.”
The All-Star weekend is this Saturday and Sunday, June 11 and 12, at Penrith Ice Palace, west of Sydney. Saturday will be comprised of the skills competitions (click here for more information), while Sunday will stage the All-Star game between Team Schlamp and Team Armstrong.
Below is a highlights package from the 2015 All-Star event, (you can check out a package of Ben's own highlights here) and while the 2016 event isn’t televised live, a 90-minute special presentation will air on Fox Sports on Thursday, June 16 (check your local guide for times).
