The Perth Thunder have rolled through the first half of the 2016 Australian Ice Hockey League season to find themselves sitting comfortably in second place off the back of a 6-3 win over the Adelaide Adrenaline.
However, due to an unusual fixturing anomaly, the Thunder will be sitting on the sidelines for the second time in the past three weekends as they prepare for the second half on 2016 and a possible run to the AIHL Finals.
The break in the momentum of the season could be enough to derail a lesser team, but Thunder head coach Dave Kenway is utilising the break to knuckle down on what he thinks need to improve.
"We just have to be on the boys, we can't get too lax, they have to step up and keep the pace, intensity and hunger alive," Kenway said.
The Thunder squad have been working hard at training on special teams play, an area where the coaching staff believes they need to improve, and Dave Kenway said the hard work has been beginning to pay off.
"You always want to work on them (the special teams) and be productive and have possession," Kenway said. "They've started to convert and be very dominant, which is good to see."
The Thunder have a bye this weekend before travelling to Melbourne on July 2-3 to take on the Melbourne Mustangs, who currently sit fifth in the AIHL standings.
The next Thunder home games are July 9-10 against third-placed CBR Brave. You can purchase tickets to these games, and indeed any of the Thunder's remaining six home games
