A five-point night from Ben Breault has propelled the Thunder to a weekend sweep over the Sydney Ice Dogs, with a 6-2 win Sunday night ensuring the Thunder claimed all six points from the weekend.
Breault scored two goals and added three assists to take his season tally to 40 points, while Michael Dorr (2G, 1A), Jessyko Bernard (1G, 2A), Per Daniel Goransson (1G, 1A) and Rob Haselhurst (2A) all enjoyed multi-point nights.
Goransson began the scoring early in the first period, scoring his third goal of the season to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead in the first five minutes, with Breault and Dorr credited with assists.
Dorr then scored one for himself before the first period had ended, doubling the Thunder advantage heading in to the first intermission with Sam Wilson scoring his first point since his return to the line up.
Dorr then grabbed his second early in the second period to put the Thunder up 3-0, but the Ice Dogs rallied late in the period to cut the score to 3-2 at the second intermission.
Breault scored in the first minute of the third period to restore the two goal lead, and he connected later in the period on the power play to give the Thunder a 5-2 advantage.
Bernard then capped off a big evening for the Thunder with a goal to take the score to the final 6-2, ensuring the Ice Dogs returned to Sydney empty-handed.
The six point weekend propels the Thunder to third place in the AIHL standings, one point behind second-place Newcastle North Stars with two games in hand, and eleven points clear of fifth-placed Melbourne Mustangs with one game in hand.
The Thunder now head to New South Wales for games against the North Stars and Sydney Bears on August 6-7, and two regulation wins would clinch the Thunder's place in the 2016 AIHL Finals.
