The Perth Thunder's season has ended in heartbreaking fashion, with a goal at the 10-minute mark of the first overtime period crushing the team's Goodall Cup hopes.
The Thunder twice held the lead against the North Stars, but conceded a goal with a little over eight minutes to go to tie the scores, then fell victim to a great centering pass and deflection in to the net to lose the contest 3-2.
Thomas Heemskerk did all he could to stop the North Stars from advancing, stopping 42 of 45 North Stars shots on net to give the Thunder a chance of advancing.
Michael Dorr got the Thunder off to an ideal start six minutes in to the first period, whacking home a rebound off Dayne Davis from an Andrew Cox shot to make the score 1-0 Thunder.
The North Stars took a penalty and put the Thunder on the power play, but were able to level the scores at 1-1 with a short-handed goal and carry it through to the first intermission.
The second period was a tight tussle until Ben Breault regained the lead for the Thunder in the final four minutes to take the game to the second intermission at 2-1.
The North Stars levelled the scores with eight minutes to go and the two teams battled through 10 minutes of overtime before the North Stars won through to the final.
The Thunder will sit in the stands Sunday as the Newcastle North Stars, looking for their second-straight Goodall Cup, face the CBR Brave, who upset the Melbourne Ice in overtime 4-3 and are looking for their first ever Goodall Cup.
