Perth Thunder’s Jamie Woodman and Kieren Webster will both return home from the IIHF World Championships with silver medals after Australia finished second in their Division 2 Group A tournament over the weekend.
Australia lost just one game for the tournament, winning three games in regulation and one in overtime to finish with 11 points in the standings, just one short of hosts and eventual winners Romania.
The Mighty Roos started the week strongly, defeating Serbia 4-3 in overtime in the opening game last Monday before beating Iceland 3-2 the following day, with Woodman scoring a goal against Iceland after tallying an assist on the game-winning overtime goal against Serbia.
Australia beat Spain 5-3 on Thursday night to set up a big clash against Romania Saturday morning (Australian time), but the hosts finished too strongly for the Mighty Roos, recording a 5-1 win.
The Mighty Roos locked up silver with a 3-0 win over Belgium on Sunday night, with the shutout sealing goaltender Anthony Kimlin’s status as Australia’s player of the tournament.
Woodman finished with two points for the tournament and while Webster wasn’t able to tally a point, he acquitted himself well on the international stage, and everyone within the Thunder organisation is immensely proud of both Jamie and Kieren.
While our two Australian representatives will now return home to prepare for the upcoming AIHL season, Thunder forward Andrew Cox still has one game remaining for New Zealand in their Division 2 Group B tournament.
For Cox, a win for his Ice Blacks against People’s Republic of Korea tonight (6pm Perth time) will ensure he’s able to bring home a silver medal, with the outside possibility of gold should the Ice Blacks win big and China suffer a hefty loss to Mexico.
