Per Daniel Goransson was credited with the game-winning goal, as the Thunder rallied with a three-goal second period after going down 1-0 early on the road.
After Sydney scored the lone goal of the first period, Jordy Kyros levelled the scores early in the second with his first AIHL goal since August 2015, before Goransson put away the game-winner.
Jessyko Bernard, in his first game for the season, scored in the second period as the Thunder took a 3-1 lead in to second intermission, before Kieren Webster iced the game with a late goal.
